Deaths and burials in Basel.

What to do immediately after a death? If someone has died at home, the attending physician (if not available: the emergency physician) must be notified. He/she issues the death certificate for the attention of the civil registry office. If the death occurs in a hospital, the relatives will receive a notification form from the hospital administration together with the medical death certificate. In the event of a violent death (accident or suicide), the police must be informed, who in turn notify the Institute of Forensic Medicine.

Notification of death. If the death has occurred in the canton of Basel-Stadt, it must be reported in person as soon as possible (in accordance with legal regulations within two days) to the funeral office, Cemetery am Hörnli, Hörnliallee 70, Riehen, during opening hours. The submitted documents will then be forwarded to the Civil Registry Office for registration.

The following are obliged to register: the management of clinics, homes and institutions, the authorities who become aware of the death, the doctor consulted, as well as the medical assistants consulted, the family members or those authorized by them, as well as other persons present, namely anyone who was present at the death of an unknown person or finds their body.

Documents for notification of death. After the initial telephone contact - during which we will have discussed the first steps with you - please gather all the necessary documents. Please bring the following with you to register the death: - Medical death certificate - Notification form of the hospital or nursing home, if the death occurred in a hospital or in a nursing home, respectively - Family booklet or family card/partnership certificate of the deceased person, if available.

Additionally, if the deceased person was not Swiss: - Settlement or foreigner's identity card - Foreign passport of the deceased person - Marriage certificate, if available - Birth certificate, if available

If the death occurred in another canton? If the death occurred in another canton, you must first report the death to the relevant civil registry office.
For the organization of the funeral, we ask you to bring the official death certificate from the competent civil registry office or the updated family record book.

Afterwards you have to report at the funeral office, at the cemetery am Hörnli, Hörnliallee 70, Riehen.

Do you wish a religious funeral? We recommend that you contact the relevant parish office before going to the funeral office and inquire about possible free dates. This will help you to avoid possible scheduling conflicts between the parish office and the cemetery. We ask for your understanding that neither the parish offices nor the funeral office at the Hörnli Cemetery, Hörnliallee 70, Riehen can freely accommodate all requests when choosing dates.
It is up to the relatives whether they wish to have a clergyman or a funeral orator officiate at the funeral service.

**Saying goodbye with dignity Anyone who loses a loved one is upset. We are committed to fulfilling the wishes of the deceased and their loved ones.

In the event of a death, the relatives are requested to register the funeral formalities in person as soon as possible at the Funeral Office, Hörnli Cemetery, Hörnliallee 70, Riehen.

The free burial. Every resident of the Canton of Basel-Stadt has the right to a free burial in the ground or urn.

The free burial includes advice to the bereaved by the staff of the funeral service, burial in a Basel state coffin, dressing in a shroud, transfer of the deceased to a Basel cemetery, laying out in a simple burial room, a funeral service with organ accompaniment in a cemetery chapel, cremation, the use of an earth row, urn row or anonymous communal grave for the duration of the legal resting period, and the burial of the urn or the burial of the coffin in a grave.
