Thanatopraxy is the hygienic care and preservation of the body of the deceased. Its aim is to give a last beautiful image of the loved one and to give the family more time to mourn.

After death, the body changes and the stigmata of death transform its appearance. Thanatopraxy helps to delay this process and preserve the facial features of the deceased.

In some countries, thanatopraxy treatment may be mandatory for repatriation. The (non-exhaustive) list can be found on thanatorium.ch.

In the case of accidents, reconstruction may also be required.
